Project Overview

Wema Empowerment Organization is a grassroots community-based organization in Nakuru, Kenya, working to support women and vulnerable groups through microfinance initiatives. The organization provides small loans, training, and mentorship to women entrepreneurs in rural and peri-urban areas, helping them build sustainable income-generating activities.

As a volunteer, you will play an important role in supporting both the field operations and administrative work of Wema, while learning firsthand how grassroots microfinance functions in Kenya.

Volunteer Roles & Activities

Field Group Support

  • Attend and observe weekly or bi-weekly women’s microfinance group meetings.
  • Assist in facilitating financial literacy sessions with the group (with guidance from Wema staff).
  • Help in record-keeping, taking meeting notes, and tracking loan repayments.
  • Interview members to gather impact stories and testimonials.

Back Office & Administration

  • Support Wema’s team with data entry, loan tracking, and updating records.
  • Assist in preparing reports, presentation materials, and fundraising proposals.
  • Contribute to Wema's digital presence through blog writing, social media content, or documentation.

Host Family: Joyce & Francis’ Home

You will stay with the warm and welcoming family of Joyce and Francis, located in a safe neighborhood in Nakuru. Joyce is deeply involved with Wema, and her husband Francis is very supportive of community initiatives. Their household includes their three children, who are friendly and curious, making your stay lively and enriching.

Requirements

  • Age: 18+
  • Interest in social entrepreneurship, finance, or community development.
  • Open-mindedness, flexibility, and respect for local cultures.
  • Swahili is not required but learning basic phrases is encouraged.
